Much like the global charts, Google reigns supreme in the US, with a similar market share dominance. The only difference comes in a slight fall in its share. Recent monthly data shows that as of June 2024, it makes up 87.45% of the US market share—compared to 91.05% worldwide.
Google’s search engine market share in the US has grown over the past decade. In 2012, its share was 81.69%. By 2017, it had risen to 87.24% and this figure has been holding relatively steady since.
Next on the list of the top search engines in the US is Bing, owned by Microsoft. Bing has a market share of 7.4%. While the top two search engines in the US parallel that of the most popular search engines used worldwide, that’s where the similarity ends. In third place is Yahoo, with a market share of 2.67%, less than half of Bing’s.
After Google, Bing, and Yahoo, the fourth most used search engine in the US is DuckDuckGo. Founded in 2008, DuckDuckGo currently has a market share of 2.04%. According to experts, users who search on DuckDuckGo do so because of the data privacy and protection it offers. For instance, DuckDuckGo blocks online data trackers that are on most other websites, including Google. It also doesn’t save users’ previous searches.
Russia’s Yandex and AOL wrap up the six biggest search engines in the US, with market shares of 0.2% and 0.09%, respectively. Combined, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, Yandex, and AOL’s shares add up to 12.4%—a fraction of Google’s.
