Furniture ecommerce sales: 2017–2024

Recent statistics on the global ecommerce furniture industry show that total sales are expected to hit $283.3 billion in 2024. This marks a 10.5% annual increase from the previous year.

The ecommerce furniture industry has been growing over the past couple of years. In 2017, total sales amounted to $158.4 billion and grew by 8.8%, to $172.4 billion in 2018, before rising another 8.4% in 2019, to $186.8 billion. From 2020 to 2024, the online furniture market experienced fluctuations as the world grappled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 and 2021, ecommerce furniture revenues rose by 26.2% and 14.4%, respectively. The double-digit increases were followed by declines of 4.3% and 0.7%, bringing online furniture market revenues to $256.4 billion in 2023. 

Nevertheless, from 2017 to 2024, the furniture industry’s ecommerce revenues rose at an average rate of 9% per year.

Furniture ecommerce sales forecast: 2025–2029

Looking ahead, sales from the global ecommerce furniture industry are forecast to continue growing. Analysts predict that total sales will rise by 12.4% in 2025, reaching $318.5 billion.

The following two years will see slightly slower annual growth rates of around 11%, bringing revenues from the online furniture market to $393.9 billion in 2027. By 2028, revenues are set to surpass the $400 billion mark, after a 6.1% annual increase. 

An additional $18 billion in annual sales is expected in 2029, when total sales are expected at $436 billion. 

From 2025 to 2029, annual online furniture sales worldwide are forecast to increase by $117.5 billion, rising at an average annual growth rate of 8.2%.

In 2024, the United States leads the global online furniture market with $125 billion in revenue, making it the dominant player by a wide margin. This figure far surpasses that of China, which ranks second with $45.1 billion. 

Trailing behind, Germany secures the third spot with $15.5 billion in sales, followed by Japan at $8.8 billion and the United Kingdom at $8.6 billion. These figures highlight the growing importance of online furniture sales in these key markets, though they remain much smaller compared to the US.
